How to design layouts for your small rental space –– that’s what we’re talking about today!
Here’s the thing: when we don’t design correctly, we don’t feel at peace in our homes. Although a small square footage or funky design (whether in your rental or just a small home in general) may feel like the main culprit, you could be making it worse if you’ve got the wrong layout designs. Here are 4 tips to design layouts for your space.
1. Go for good first impressions.
What do you want to see first when you enter a room? Use that as your focal point. Don’t bring attention to something that isn’t the star of the room.
Example: if you enter your living room, the first thing you might want to see is your comfy sofa, maybe not your TV stand. Think about the most appealing part of your space and make it your focal point.
2. Watch Your Lines in Your Layouts
Don’t block space with your couch or line up all your furniture side by side –– it’s your home, not a maze. We are more inclined to feel at home and more cozy when the layouts in our home kind of reflect nature. Nature is organic –– we like when things feel like they are naturally placed, not manufactured.
3. Use mirrors in strategic ways.
Mirrors add reflection, light, and the illusion that your space is a bit bigger than it really is.
By using them in strategic locations, you add depth and warmth. They’re great for hanging in smaller rooms, catty-cornering spaces like your bedroom, and just adding a touch of simple elegance to elevate your whole look.
4. Don’t neglect functionality.
As much as I love form over function, good function is what will keep you loving your space. Nobody likes a dysfunctional space that has them at a constant inconvenience, and you won’t either: whether it’s scraping your arm against a random corner somewhere just because you loved the way a shelf looked in that exact location, or something else like that. You get it.
At the end of the day, the practicality of your space is what will bring you the most peace, rest, and contentment in your space!
Design layouts in your home that bring you joy, maximize your space, and work smartly/creatively. You can defeat the feeling of claustrophobia in a small space by making the right decisions in your layouts.
